Hello my faithful followers…Today, I would like to encourage you to go out and buy flowers! Especially ones that have a lovely scent, like the Star Gazer Lily.
There are so many pretty flowers out there I think you could buy a different one for each day of the year. Flowers make such a big impact for relatively little money.
If you’re not sure what flower to buy, might I suggest you buy my favorite cut flower — the Star Gazer Lily. You can get these bouquets rather inexpensively at either Trader Joe’s ($7) or Costco ($9). You only get a a few stems but that’s enough to fill your space with the loveliest fragrance.
These flowers are also great because they are very forgiving when you arrange them. With just four stems and a narrow necked vase you can make a lovely arrangement. The narrow necked vase is essential to my “floral designing” because I really suck at making floral arrangements. A narrow necked vase keeps the bouquet tight so it’ll stay how you’ve arranged them in your hand even after you’ve put them in your vase.
The inter web suggests you change the water every day and I’m sure that’s great advise. So for the record I urge you to do that. Off the record: I have to admit I don’t change the water and the flowers generally last a little less than 2 weeks. I do however pick off the stamen. (What’s a “stamen” you ask? It’s the “male part” of the flower — the dark brown rectangular bit in the middle that drops brown powder…too…many…jokes…trying to resist…)
I have to thank my wonderful mother-in-law for this tip. (Thanks, Mr. Man’s Mom!) Before she showed me I could do this, the flowers would just drop brown powder on the table, leaving an annoying mess. It’s pretty simple: grab the stamen with a tissue and gently pull. #toomanyjokesheadexploding
I’m a sucker for flowers with a lot of fragrance. Here are a few other suggestions for you to experiment with. They’re not as inexpensive as the Star Gazer but trust me: once you find a floral scent you love, walking into your home when you have a bouquet of them will put a smile on your face and that’s always worth it.
